San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team was trying to sign a tight end “now at the podium on Wednesday. According to the NFL’s daily transaction wire, the team worked out five tight ends:
Zach Davidson
Peyton Hendershot
Nick Muse
Messiah Swinson
Cole Turner
The team also worked out veteran quarterback Mike White. Shanahan said he wasn’t sure if the team could add a quarterback due to the team’s roster issues.
Davidson’s only NFL experience came last year with the Buffalo Bills in Weeks 11, 13 -- against the Niners, and 14, against the Rams. He’s 6’7”, 245 pounds. Davidson had 18 snaps as an inline tight end, 17 snaps in the slot, six snaps out wide as a receiver, and one in the backfield. He also played on Buffalo’s kick and punt return teams, as well as the point-after team. PFF gave Davidson a 93.6 run blocking grade against San Francisco in Week 13. That was his strong suit during those three games.
Hendershot, a 6’5”, 254-pound tight end, played for the Dallas Cowboys in 2022 and 2023, and appeared in five games with the Kansas City Chiefs last season. He caught all five of his targets for 51 yards. Hendershot played 223 snaps with the Chiefs last season, with most of those coming on various special teams units. He did play 48 snaps as an inline tight end, 21 lined up as a wide receiver, and 15 in the slot.
Muse was drafted in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He’s played a total of 11 snaps in two seasons, while appearing in three games. Muse has one reception for 22 yards in his career. He’s 6’5”, 259 pounds. There’s a theme here.
Swinson was an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State in the 2024 NFL Draft. He has no NFL experience. However, he does fit the theme at 6’7”, 259 pounds.
Turner, a fifth-round pick by the Washington Commanders from the 2022 NFL Draft, has appeared in 20 games in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Turner caught 11 passes for 120 yards in 2023. He’s 6’7”, 249 pounds. Turner did not play in 2024.
