At least 15 workers were trapped inside an industrial tunnel in Los Angeles after it collapsed on Wednesday night, officials said.

The collapse happened up to six miles away from the tunnel’s only access point, the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement.

The department said that it had dispatched more than 100 rescue workers to the site in the city’s neighborhood of Wilmington, about 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. No injuries were immediately confirmed on Wednesday night.

The tunnel was part of a $630 million wastewater management project commissioned by the Los Angeles County Sanitation District, expected to be completed in 2027.

FlatironDragados, the project’s main contractor, said on its website that the seven-mile tunnel would transport water from a treatment plant to the Pacific Ocean and allow repairs to aging infrastructure elsewhere.

Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles said on social media that she was at the scene. Janice Hahn, a Los Angeles County Board supervisor whose district includes Wilmington, was on her way, said her spokesman, Esteban García.

This is a developing story that will be updated.
